A Jazz Age Dress from BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern

One of the major perks of working at Potter Craft is having access to patterns and project instructions before they even hit the bookshelves. So I’m pleased to share with you a sneak peak of this pattern from BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern, which will be out in stores this December!

I’ve always been smitten with Twenties style, so when I saw a poster for the third annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, I just knew that I had to go. The event brings together New York City’s most dapper dames and fabulous flappers, with big band music, an outdoor dancing floor, and lots of vintage clothing vendors.

Though I was short on time, my mom offered to make me the 1920s-style dress I was coveting in the manuscript for BurdaStyle’s follow-up to The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook. It was simple, elegant, and absolutely perfect for the lawn party.

So we embarked on the ultimate mother-daughter project: I packed up the pattern and instructions from the manuscript and, of course, put together a Pinterest board of inspiring images. My mom bought a few yards lovely pink lawn, whipped up this gorgeous dress in less than a week, and shipped it off with a mile-long strand of her pearls (being a proper Southern mother, she couldn’t let me go to a party with fake pearls).

Meanwhile, I scoped out accessories from various local vintage boutiques, assembled a polka-dot chiffon scarf from a botched sewing project, and found some cream colored lace to add to the drop-waist ruffles.

As you can see in the photos, we had a fabulous time picnicking, dancing, and–most importantly–posing for photographers (including the legendary Bill Cunningham), who founds tons of inspiration from the crowd of New Yorkers during this stylish afternoon.

I hope you enjoyed this preview, and that it whets your appetite for even more projects inspired by fashion from decades past in BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern. Many, many thanks to my mom for gamely making this dress, and to Michael Loew for generously providing all the outdoor shots!

Are there supposed to be other photos or a video – all I get is a big, black rectangle.

Zanne, that sometimes happens. If you reload the page, you should see the slideshow.
