Log Cabin Quilting for the Fourth of July by Susan Beal, author of Modern Log Cabin Quilting |

The Log Cabin quilting design is one of the most American of patterns, and I’ll be wearing my Block Pocket Apron for our little Fourth of July barbecue this year. If you’d like to make an apron for yourself, too, July is the perfect time to stitch one up!
Fat Quarterly will be hosting a quilt-along project on their blog, kicking off July 6, with the pattern and lots of helpful tips and photos each week! From choosing your pillowcase and fabrics to stitching on the sash, Fat Quarterly will be sharing plenty of ideas for making your apron superpersonal and fun.
Thank you to everyone who has shared photos of their Modern Log Cabin Quilting projects with me – I LOVE seeing them all! If you’d like to post pictures of your aprons, quilts, or anything else from my book, please add them to the book’s flickr pool. I love my friend and fellow Portland Modern Quilt Guild member Jen Carlton Bailly’s dramatic orange-and-linen Modern Crosses quilt. She used 59 different orange prints (and one pop of green!) to make those gorgeous crosses shine against the natural linen.
And if you’re in Oregon, I’m very excited for a few quilting events coming up! My Modern Crosses quilt will be part of a PMQG exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon, on July 9. I’ll be signing books from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Stitchin Post (311 W. Cascade Street, Sisters, OR). Then, on July 16 and 17, I’ll be teaching a special weekend of log-cabin quilting at the Pacific Northwest College of Art’s Summer of Making. We’ll be studying antique and vintage quilts, experimenting with piecing and design, and creating blocks perfect for quilts or smaller projects. I’m really looking forward to it and would love to have you in the class!
I’m also so excited that Woman’s Day will be sharing the Block Pocket Apron pattern on their site this month for readers to sew. Check it out below!
