TNNA 2010 |
|
CrafterNews has finally recovered from an amazing whirlwind weekend at the Summer 2010 TNNA (National NeedleArts Association) trade show. This year the mood was upbeat and positive. We had a great time visiting with authors, meeting new crafty friends, and showing other attendees some of the fabulous books we have coming up. Here’s just a glimpse.
Friday, 8:30 p.m.
Ravelry’s Ice Cream Social
One of the reasons we love coming to Columbus is Jeni’s ice cream, so it’s no surprise that Ravelry’s Ice Cream Social featuring this artisanal ice cream had 600 attendees! As we enjoy our Salty Caramel ice cream and Cherry Lambic sorbet, we run into <a href=”http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780823099528″>Faith, Hope, Love, Knitting author Lorna Miser—the Lorna of Lorna’s Laces. We talk about her upcoming book, The Knitter’s Guide to Hand-Dyed and Variegated Yarn (on shelves this November). It’s a stitch dictionary and project book that helps knitters make the most of those gorgeous fibers.

Wendy D. Johnson Signing
One of our very favorite knitting bloggers, Wendy D. Johnson of WendyKnits, signs copies of Toe-Up Socks for Every Body for 100 eager fans. She seems almost overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. Awww…Wendy we love you.

Knitting Mochimochi fever
People can’t keep from grabbing a hot-off-the-press copy of Knitting Mochimochi by Anna Hrachovec. What can we say? There’s just something so wonderfully wild about these funny creative toys and gifts. What’s not to love about the Pigs with Wigs and Feet Eater slippers?
Saturday, 2 p.m.
Melissa Leapman Signing
Awesome knitwear designer Melissa Leapman took time out of her busy TNNA teaching schedule to give a few pointers on color at her book signing for Color Knitting the Easy Way. She also was interviewed by Ravelrey for their website Hello TNNA. We finally figure out how to use slipped stitches to knit plaids!

Doris Chan’s Mini-Fashion Show
Crochet advocate Doris Chan has a few friends model designs straight out of her book Crochet Lace Innovations. Doris wanted people to see how well crocheted fabric can move. She is right! As good as the garments look in the book, they look even better in person. We’re lucky enough to convince her to give us a private lesson on how to create broomstick lace.

Vampire Knits: Projects to Keep You Knitting from Twilight to Dawn
We knew it was going to be big, but we didn’t anticipate how big. We give a preview peak at the upcoming Vampire Knits by Genevieve Miller (in stores September 14th) and it is a show hit! All you dark and tortured knitters get ready. People keep coming by to check out the Twilight, True Blood, and Vampire Diaries-inspired projects from the book.

Rowan Yarns
CrafterNews sits down with Kate Buller, brand manager for Rowan, to discuss setting up a workshop tour for her upcoming book Fresh Fashion Knits (available November). Stay tuned for details!

Nicky Epstein project cards
We officially run out of project cards from Nicky Epstein’s Knitting Block by Block (available November). Throughout the show, attendees expressed excitement about this ingenious new sourcebook on knitted blocks, which includes 150 block patterns and all the surprising ways you can mix, match, and join them to create amazing accessories, toys, and fashions. Don’t worry, check back with CrafterNews in November and we’ll be sure to have a project available for you to download.

Crochet in Fashion
Linda Permann, author of Crochet Adorned stops to chat about all the fellow crocheters she’s met over the weekend. Seems like everyone we know is crocheting. As she proves here, crochet is an ultra-hot fashion trend. Spread the word!
Monday, 1 p.m.
What’s new in yarn?
We bump into Clara Parkes, editor of Knitter’s Review and author of the bestselling The Knitter’s Book of Wool. She saw many new yarns at the show, and we talk about the fabulous cashmere she found and the small resurgence in novelty yarn. Her TNNA wrap up is always a must-read.
Monday, 3 p.m.
Exhausted but inspired by everything we saw at the show, we trade goodbyes with our new friends, including the talented Nora Bellows of Noni Designs and the ladies of Schaefer Yarn, who generously allow us to take home a sample of their beautiful hand painted yarns. Until next year Columbus!
